In a Cage of Light begins with Öfverholm on a trapeze. She wallows into a combative and intimate choreography with Jordi Cortes, legendary dancer from DV8 Physical Theatre, where the limitations of the body and the fragility of life are put at stake. Lauri Antila’s raspy bass and Tobias Hallgren’s death-angel figure with a whip create a dramatic counterpoint.

With explosive presence and strong scenic poetry, the work examines age, vulnerability, and resilience – in a way that affects, touches, and remains.

Stockholm 59° North + Philip Berlin

s o f t w a r e is a new choreographic work by Philip Berlin, created together with Stockholm 59° North. The title derives from a poem by the poet and artist Eugéne Sundelius von Rosen.

The piece unfolds as the dancers’ work aims to move swiftly and lightly, expanding; every impulse changes the direction. Energy evolves through postpunk extreme precision, raw hypnotic repetition, and ecstatic transgression. But what happens when there is a glitch?!

BIOGRAPHIES

Choreographers

Charlotta Öfverholm is a dancer and choreographer with an extensive international background, having worked with companies and choreographers including DV8, Bill T. Jones, Complexions, Roberto Galvan, Robert Poole, Joseph Tmim, Metros, Sharon Friedman, Dwight Rhoden and Farm in the Cave, among others. In Sweden she has, among other roles, played Death in Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal by Benke Rydman and Hugo Hansén, appeared in several works by Björn Elisson and in Alexander Ekman’s Kuckel. She is currently touring with Scottish Ballet’s Mary Queen of Scots, portraying Elizabeth I.
Since 1995, Charlotta has created her own productions, which have toured both nationally and internationally. She also choreographs on commission for companies including Göteborg Opera Dance Company, SPIRA, RTV and Norrdans. She is currently choreographing Mikael Karlsson’s newly written opera Melancholia at the Royal Swedish Opera.
In 2015 she founded Age on Stage, an artistic initiative that challenges ageism in the dance world and redefines the ageing body as an artistic resource.
In 2026 Charlotta received the Cullberg Prize from the City of Stockholm; in 2025 the Ivo Cramér scholarship; and in 2019 the Carina Ari Medal.
She trained with Lia Schubert at Balettakademien in Gothenburg, at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York, and at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Los Angeles.

Philip Berlin is a dancer and choreographer working in Sweden and internationally. He trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm and has worked with choreographers including Cristina Caprioli, Frédéric Gies, Mats Ek and Mårten Spångberg.
Berlin has worked with CCN Ballet de Lorraine in France, performing in works by artists including Merce Cunningham, William Forsythe, Mathilde Monnier, Tero Saarinen, Faustin Linyekula and La Ribot.
Since 2016 he has collaborated with Gisèle Vienne and toured internationally with Crowd.
As a choreographer, Berlin has presented work at venues including Dansens Hus, MDT – Moderna Dansteatern, Moderna Museet and the Oslo Opera House. His work Le Scénario recently premiered with Danish Dance Theatre at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen.

Performers

Davide De Ponte is from Italy and joined the Royal Swedish Ballet in 2023. He received his dance education at Ballettschule Theater Basel in Switzerland, Dancer Art Studio and Teatro di San Carlo in Italy. He was also a finalist at the Prix de Lausanne 2023.
He has been part of Stockholm 59°North as a dancer since 2025. He took part in the ConfidencenModern Program in 2025, dancing in In the Mood for Tea and ISLE.
Repertoire includes Infra, En kopp kaffe, Romeo och Julia (Lead Mandolin), Midsommarnattsdröm, If It Feels Good…, Svansjön, Askungen, Gustavia, and Julia och Romeo.

Carl Sjögren is from Sweden and is a 2nd Soloist with the Royal Swedish Ballet. He trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and received the Alhanko Foundation scholarship in 2019 and the Gösta Svalberg scholarship in 2021. He played the roles of Billy Elliot and Michael Caffrey in the musical Billy Elliot at Malmö Opera and Stockholm City Theatre.
He has been part of Stockholm 59°North as a dancer since 2025. He took part in the RENTRE programme, danced The Return of Spring Time in 2025, and performed in In the Mood for Tea and ISLE in the Confidencen Modern Program the same year.
Repertoire includes Nötknäpparen, Midsommarnattsdröm, Totality in Parts, Eskapist, Cacti, Riptide, Svansjön, Askungen, Le Corsaire, Gustavia (Gustav III), En kopp kaffe, Giselle (Hilarion), Romeo och Julia (Tybalt), Midsommarnattsdröm (A Dreamer), Minus 16, Julia och Romeo, and Suite en Blanc.

Jordi Cortes is a choreographer and dancer. He trained at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and has performed with Lanònima Imperial, Mudances, Metros, DV8 Physical Theatre, Nigel Charnock, EN-KNAP and the National Theatre Company in London. He has directed and performed Lucky (Best Performer at the Dublin Fringe Festival 2005), Day Dreaming at Dusk, Happy Hour, Prestidigitaccions and the duo Mat. His choreographic work also includes De Cara and Gran Ecart.
He has created pieces for the Avignon Festival (No matter, Try again), Trepverter and Brickskin for Galili Dance Company, L’Espectre de la Rose for Pedro Pawels Dance Company, and Fica Ainda for Almada Dance Company.
With Ölelés, a performance directed and performed with Damián Muñoz, he received the Ciutat de Barcelona 2004 Dance Award and the Feria de Huesca 2005 Award. His later works include Bertolt Brecht’s The Seven Deadly Sins in collaboration with Frederic Amat, Mozartnú with Iago Pericot, Pas de Deux Sans Moi with Charlotta Öfverholm, and the integrated dance works V.I.T.R.I.O.L. and Black Out. As an actor and performer, his work includes the short film Coup de Grâce by Clara van Gool and VIATGES by Ferran Audí.
His theatre-dance work IN HEAVEN, directed by and starring Cortes, has toured since 2011. He has worked with Charlotta Öfverholm since 2007 and co-directed Kody Zivota – The Last Forecast as well as Pas de deux sans toi. In a Cage of Light is the first piece they dance together in.

Lauri Antila is a versatile musician and composer working across classical music, jazz and different styles of folk music. He arranges and composes music. Antila received his classical double-bass education at the Music Conservatory in Helsinki and took masterclasses with Prof. František Pošta in Prague. He studied jazz with Reggie Workman in New York and Niels-Henning Ørsted-Pedersen.
He often works with solo vocalists. Lauri has performed in many musicals and composed and played music for, among others, the Finnish National Theatre, the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten), Stockholm City Theatre, Riksteatern, SVT Drama and the Romeo & Julia Choir. He also created the duet show Box of Stories with mime artist Branch Worsham.
Lauri is a member of the Klezmer group Sabbath Hela Veckan. He has an ongoing collaboration with Charlotta Öfverholm and has created music for Kody Zivota – The Last Forecast, Les Vieux, Pas de deux sans toi, How come?, In a Cage of Light, Prosthesis and Checking Out.

Tobias Hallgren works as a light designer and dancer. He is the technical director of Compagnie Jus de la Vie and has worked with the company since 1998 as a dancer, light designer and stage designer.
He is the director of Lumination of Sweden, a leading lighting-technology company in Stockholm.
With a background as a dancer, he trained at Balettakademien in Stockholm and Rotterdamse Dansakademie, and has worked with choreographers including Cristina Caprioli.
Tobias Hallgren and Charlotta Öfverholm have worked closely together for more than two decades, creating and touring to festivals around the world. He is both light designer and performer in In a Cage of Light.
