Die Fledermaus at Confidencen
Operetta by Johann Strauss II
Performances on May 1, 2, 4, 9, 10, 15 (extra performance!), 16 and 17
In Die Fledermaus we encounter a bourgeois 19th-century society driven by the pursuit of status, impeccable appearances and carefully suppressed desires. Beneath the glitter of the salons simmer restlessness, loneliness, and a yearning to be recognised for who one truly is. It is in this atmosphere that psychoanalysis begins to take shape. Freud is already at the door.
This production at Ulriksdals slottsteater Confidencen reflects our own age through the lens of history. Today’s social media and curated self-images have replaced the salons and titles of the past, yet the longing for validation remains strikingly familiar. During a masquerade ball in an 18th-century theatre, the characters are momentarily freed from the constraints of their social roles. Through disguises, fleeting passions and comic misunderstandings, vulnerability, desire and the search for authenticity emerge.
Johann Strauss’s immortal score sparkles with wit, elegance and irresistible vitality. Yet beneath the laughter lies a deeper question: what happens when the masks begin to slip? Die Fledermaus becomes a playful yet perceptive study of human relationships—a festive night in which the audience laughs, only to recognise itself in humanity’s timeless desire to belong.

Champagne Tasting Event
May 9 and 16, 4:30 PM
Let the champagne and the music flow before the performance with an exclusive champagne tasting … and perhaps even a small musical surprise.
In the Confidencen Room, overlooking the palace park, you will be introduced to the champagne Berivagus, created by Bernhard Smedberg, who in 2022 became the first Swedish winemaker in Champagne. We begin with vendace roe canapés and a welcome drink, followed by a tasting of three additional champagnes. You will also learn more about how champagne is produced, as well as what it is like to work as a Swede in the Champagne region.
The tasting will take place at standing tables, but chairs can be arranged on site if needed.
Welcome!
