Confidencen is Sweden’s oldest Rococo theatre, built in 1753 by Queen Lovisa Ulrika and King Adolf Frederick. Designed to rival the court theatres of continental Europe in both architectural sophistication and technical innovation, it became a vibrant centre for composers, musicians, and performers from Sweden and across Europe during the late eighteenth century. The stage welcomed figures such as Bellman and Gustav III during his earliest explorations of theatre and opera.

After nearly 200 years of decline, the theatre was rescued and restored to its former splendour thanks to opera singer Kjerstin Dellert and her tireless efforts to revive Confidencen and return it to life as a working theatre. Through the generosity of donors and sponsors, and with the support of many of today’s leading artists who have performed on its stage, Confidencen has become both a unique cultural heritage site and one of Sweden’s most distinguished venues for theatre and opera.

Because the theatre has been carefully restored in modern times, visitors can experience the eighteenth-century environment at close range and much as it appeared during its golden age. The royal halls and foyers provide exceptional settings for dinners, exhibitions, and special events.

As a performance venue, Confidencen presents a broad repertoire where theatre, contemporary dance, new circus, classical concerts, and modern popular music meet historically informed opera productions. In these productions, the original Rococo stage machinery comes alive once more, illuminated solely by candlelight.

Alongside our role as a theatre, concert hall, and opera house, we invest heavily in educational programmes and school performances, ensuring that future generations can experience this historic setting and be inspired by performing arts of the highest quality.
